A Balkan regional endemic ruderal
species last time found in the European Turkey (here). This tall
spiny plant has a very peculiar aspect (which is reflected in
the characteristic specific name) which makes it easy to be
recognized. It is quite common in south-western Romania.
In the rest of the country the species is
very rare. According to Flora Reipublicae Popularis rRomanicae vol.
IX (1964) the species entered the south-western part of Romania
"just in the last times". However in Moldavia and
Transylvania it gradually disappeared in the XXth century from the
areas where it was reported previously.
In Transylvania, Apuseni Mountains the
species was reported between Brad and Abrud around Valcan
calcareous massif in the 60s of the XXth century. We
cannot find again the species there in many years (1996-2012).
In Moldavia it is mentioned by Chifu et al. (2006) in Suceava
county - northern Oriental Carpathians (Moldova-Sulita,
Rarau, Lucina) and Vrancea county (Vintileasa). In no case the plant
acts like an aggressive invader.
Tarcu Mountains, along the verge of the road to Muntele
Mic ski resort, Caras-Severin county, august 2012.
